(STILLWATER, OKLA / Aug. 7, 2012) —The tallies are in and it looks like local children and teens really did “Dream Big and Read” all summer long at the Stillwater Public Library.

“We are amazed and exceptionally proud of the kids’ achievements this year,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director.  “During June and July, the 1268 children and teens who registered for the summer program read 17,475 hours and checked out over 20,000 books.”

“Summer @ Your Library” is the Stillwater Public Library’s eight week program that provides exciting performances, fun activities and great prizes to incentivize children to read through the summer months.

The children in the “Dream Big: Read” program were reading for chances to win classroom visits from local singer/songwriter Monty Harper, gift cards from Sylvan Learning Center, Wondertorium Prize packages and a grand “Mystery Prize.”  The winners included:

  • Monty Harper Classroom Visit: Elizabeth Heeren, Dakeavion Henley, Kierra Miles, Victor Minasian, Jenna Ranson, Brian Yang and Madison Zweiacker.
  • Sylvan $25 gift card: Andrew Ferguson, Catherine Thomason and Sara Moore.
  • Wondertorium Prize Package: Audrey Dillin and Ean Neufeld.

The program’s grand prize was a mystery package which was slowly revealed over the summer and included Mazzio’s pizzas, Hastings and Marble Slab gift cards and Carmike Cinema movie passes.  The grand prize winner was Kaydence Hix.

“The 2012 Summer Reading Program was a HUGE success!” said Nikole Kelty, children’s librarian.  “We’re already looking forward to our next Winter Reading Program, and we can’t encourage parents enough to get their children involved in these events.  They excite the kids and really do keep them reading throughout the school breaks.”

In an astounding turn of events, a brother and sister were the big prize winners in the teen’s “Own the Night” grand prize drawing.  Rachel and Adam Foulke were each winners of a Kindle Fire provided by Friends of the Library.

“I couldn’t believe it when I drew both a brother and sister,” said Scott Freeman, teen librarian.  “But it really goes to show what we’ve been telling the kids all summer: the more you read, the more you win.  Rachel and Adam were two of our biggest readers this summer and both deserved to win.”

According to Freeman, 315 teens signed up for the program and read 10,140 hours which is a record for the library.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these kids,” said Freeman.  “The teen years are a challenging time when students can either become very avid readers or completely let reading fall to the wayside as they become busy with other social events.  We’re excited to be uncovering the formula for keeping reading a priority at this age.”

Major “Summer @ Your Library” sponsors include Friends of the Stillwater Public Library, Stillwater Public Library Trust, Chris’ University Spirit, KOSU, OK Quality Printing, Inc., U.S. Institute of Museum & Library Services, Oklahoma Department of Libraries and Sonic Corporation.
