What is stormwater?

Stormwater is the term given to water which result from precipitation events. Rain, sleet, hail and snowmelt contribute to stormwater runoff when such precipitation is not allowed to filter into the ground because of impervious surfaces such as streets, parking lots, roofs and sidewalks. Water runoff from other sources, such as excessive watering with sprinkler systems or water hoses or swimming pool drainage, which enters into our drainage ways can also be classified as stormwater.

Why is it important to know about stormwater?

Two components of stormwater are very important and can affect you:

1) Quantity

The volume of water and time for runoff is important in terms of water supplies (the amount of water found in groundwater and surface waters like lakes, rivers and streams) and flood control and management (the considerations for proper urban drainage and preparation for water to extend outside of stream banks).

2) Quality

Stormwater runoff is not treated at any type of treatment facility. Houses, yards, driveways, sidewalks, streets and storm drains convey stormwater directly into streams, ponds and lakes. Unfortunately, the water runoff also collects contaminants as it runs its course to such locations. This can cause water pollution to surface waters and groundwater.
