Power Line Improvements

Power Line Improvements

Project Manager

Clint Oliver, Electric Chief Engineer

What We're Doing

Stillwater Electric Utility (SEU) will install an additional circuit along four miles of existing power lines on the northeast portion of the city. Along Husband Street, the existing power line will move to the west, away from the road and trees. See the map below for the complete route.

Anticipated Milestones

  • Anticipated Date (Design): Complete

  • Anticipated Date (Completion): November 2019

Benefits of the Project

Key benefits of the Power Line Improvements project include:

  • Increased reliability of SEU's power system.

  • Connecting the new Stillwater Energy Center to the electric grid at multiple locations.

  • Allows us to better manage problems and reduce outages.

    • This work is part of our move toward using advanced equipment that is designed to protect the electric system and rapidly isolate outages.

Updates

02.07.2014: Bids for a general contractor were received.

06.28.2018: The Power Line Improvement Project is progressing at a steady rate. As of June 25, the poles for the stretch along North Husband Street are now installed and the contractor hired by the Stillwater Utilities Authority is expected to restore any damage caused to sidewalks, curbs, land and rights of way in the next few weeks. Crews will return to string new wires when all the poles are installed after Independence Day through the beginning of August.

08.16.2018: The Power Line Improvement Project is near completion. The power lines were energized on August 2, 2018, and are performing as designed. Contract crews will work to remove debris created during construction and repair the walking path that was damaged at Boomer Lake on North Husband Street. Around 30 panels on the walking path will be replaced as part of the restoration. Pedestrians using the path during replacement should expect portions of the path to close or be rerouted temporarily. Construction is expected to start on Sept. 10.

Once restoration is complete and the contract crew completes their work, Stillwater Electric Utility crews will transfer the distribution lines on North Husband.

10.15.2018: Repairs to the walking path have been completed. Stillwater Electric Utility crews will begin transferring the distribution lines on North Husband over to the new poles beginning this winter. This will allow the trees along the road to flourish.

06.04.2019: Stillwater Electric Utility crews have installed the new power lines that will replace the old ones. A wet winter and spring have slowed construction in the park area, but work is continuing at a steady pace.

07.08.2019: The locates have been called in and will be ready to dig in the new single phase services. Once all of the risers are transferred  we will be able to transfer electric to the new 3 phase line and begin removing the old 3 phase line along Husband from Lakeview to Airport.

09.18.2019: Distribution crews have been relocating the original underground electric lines to the new steel poles, recently installed for the new transmission project. We currently have one remaining underground line to relocate and one section of sidewalk to repair. Once this is completed, the original line can be de-energized and the removal process can begin. The street lights will remain on the wooden poles for street lightning while the lines energizing them will relocate to the new structures. Weather permitting, we will start the removal process the week of the 23rd, starting at Airport and working south to Lakeview along Husband.

10.18.2019: Project Completed
