Before reopening businesses, City officials recommend flush water lines

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / April 30, 2020) –The City of Stillwater is recommending that restaurants, salons, offices and other business flush their water lines before reopening for business. Some businesses will be permitted to reopen May 1 under the guidelines as part of Governor Kevin Stitt’s “Open Up, Remain Safe” (OURS) Program.
According to Water Utilities Director James Driskel, many businesses have been closed for about a month, so it is important to have a comprehensive flushing plan as part of any reopening schedule.
A comprehensive flushing plan includes the following:
- Flushing hot water lines at every tap for several minutes, then flushing the cold water lines at every tap for several minutes.
- Consider draining water heaters, then flushing the lines once the heating tank has re-filled.
- Restaurant personnel should flush all kitchen lines, including sinks, dishwashers, ice makers and similar appliances, and should also consider emptying and refilling ice makers and other appliances that pull water direction directly from water taps.
Contact a licensed plumber or consult the owner’s manual for correct procedures when draining hot water tanks.
