(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / July 14, 2017) – Eastbound and westbound SH-51 (6th Avenue) in Stillwater will reopen to traffic at US-177 (Perkins Road) by mid-day on Monday, July 17, nearly a week earlier than expected.

6th Avenue will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between the Stillwater Central Railroad tracks and the Perkins Road intersection as part of an ongoing Oklahoma Department of Transportation reconstruction project. Motorists should be alert to lane shifts on 6th Avenue on the west side of the Perkins Road intersection.

Additionally, northbound and southbound Perkins Road lanes remain narrowed to one lane in each direction between Hall of Fame Avenue and 12th Avenue through August.

"We are grateful to the public and the businesses surrounding the reconstruction project for their patience during the intersection's closure," Transportation Director Monty Karns said. "We'd also like to thank ODOT and the contractors for their diligence to complete the work at the intersection that necessitated the closure."

Karns said the City of Stillwater would begin to remove the orange cones and re-time the turn signals at the closed left turn lanes at the 6th and Main, Hall of Fame and Main, and Hall of Fame and Perkins intersections after the 6th and Perkins intersection is reopened to traffic on Monday.

Businesses around the construction project are still accessible. These include:

  • Daylight Donuts
  • H&R Block
  • Kinnunen Sales & Rental
  • Phillips 66/OnCue Express
  • Sonic Drive-In
  • Stillwater Milling Company
  • Suddenlink Communications

The City of Stillwater suggests drivers use these alternate routes when traveling to the above businesses.

  • Northbound and southbound traffic: Main, Lewis, Lowry and Burdick streets.
  • Westbound and eastbound traffic: Virginia, 3rd, 9th and 12th avenues.

The $7.4 million project is scheduled for completion in September. The City of Stillwater posts updates on the project online at http://stillwater.org/page/home/government/current-projects/transportation-projects/6th-avenue-perkins-road.

MEDIA RELEASE

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / June 1, 2017) – Select left-turn lanes at three major intersections will close beginning June 5 to accommodate larger trucks traveling via detours for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) project at 6th Avenue and Perkins Road. Left turns at these intersections can still be made from combined left-through lanes.

Some left-turn lanes at the 6th and Main, Hall of Fame and Main, and Hall of Fame and Perkins intersections will be affected. Traffic signals will be timed to allow protected left-hand turns from the combined left-through lanes. Drivers should expect some delays when traveling through these impacted intersections.

The turn lanes are closing in response to ODOT’s closure of the west leg of 6th Avenue near the Stillwater Milling Company for construction. Closing the dedicated left-turn lanes will give larger vehicles more room to make turns when traveling to or from this area.

The closed left-turn lanes and west leg of 6th Avenue are expected to reopen later this summer.

The City of Stillwater will alter signal lights and place orange and black signs to direct drivers into the appropriate travel lanes. There will be construction and detour signs in the affected areas to direct drivers through the detour route as they travel near the project area.

Businesses around the construction project are still accessible. These include:

  • Daylight Donuts
  • H&R Block
  • Kinnunen Sales & Rental
  • Phillips 66/OnCue Express
  • Sonic Drive-In
  • Stillwater Milling Company
  • Suddenlink Communications

  • Northbound and southbound traffic: Main, Lewis, Lowry and Burdick streets.
  • Westbound and eastbound traffic: Virginia, 3rd, 9th and 12th avenues.

ODOT anticipates completing the project by September 2017. The City of Stillwater posts updates on the project online at http://stillwater.org/page/home/government/current-projects/transportation-projects/6th-avenue-perkins-road.
