Call for young artists/authors: Enter the Sister Cities International Young Artists/Authors Showcases

MEDIA RELEASE

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / March 15, 2017) – The Stillwater Sister Cities Council is now accepting entries for the Sister Cities International Young Artists/Authors Showcases.

This year’s theme, “We’re Going Places,” showcases the importance of travel and exchange in achieving peace. Young artists and authors are encouraged to draw/write about their experiences with sister cities, travel, exchange, international friendships and their goals to present their vision of where the future will lead.

All entries must be delivered to the City of Stillwater Community Center, 315 W. 8th Ave., by 5 p.m. April 14 to qualify for the local competition. Stillwater Sister Cities Council will submit the local winners to the international competition.

The contest has categories for art, essays and poetry and there is no cost to participate. Participants must abide by the eligibility requirements below.

Eligibility:

  • Participants must be between 13 and 18 years of age at the time the 2017 deadline.

  • All entries, with completed entry forms, must be received on or before 5 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2017, by the Stillwater Sister Cities Council located in the City of Stillwater Community Center at 315 W. 8th Ave.

  • There is no cost to the students to participate in the local competition.

  • The Stillwater Sister Cities Council will pay all entry fees/return fees to Sister Cities International competition for the local winning entries.

Young Artists:

  • Only two-dimensional (2D), unframed artwork. All media is encouraged except for photography.

  • Dimensions of the art and matting must not exceed 24 in. x 36 in.

  • All entries must be supported by matting if applicable. Do not frame the entry.

  • The council will select one art entry, which will receive a $100 cash award, and it will be entered in the international competition.

  • Five U.S. and five international finalists will be selected.

  • One U.S. artist and one international artist will be selected as grand prize winners. Each will receive $1,000 and the artwork will go on an international tour to select cities across the U.S.

  • Judging will take place in late May, and winners and finalists will be announced in June.

Young Authors (Two categories: Essays and Poetry):

  • Essays are not to exceed 500 words.

  • Poetry is not to exceed 25 lines.

  • All entries must be typed in English.

  • Judges will evaluate entries on theme interpretation, composition and grammar.

  • All work must be original and inspired by the theme.

  • One essay and one poetry winner will be selected from the local competition in each category (essay or poetry). Both authors will be awarded a $50 cash prize and entered in the international competition.

  • International Awards 1st Place Personal Essay - $1,000

  • International Awards 1st Place Poem - $1,000

  • Two finalists will also be selected from each poetry and essay category.

  • The six winning entries will be published on the Sister Cities International website, medium bog and displayed at the annual conference in Virginia Beach, VA.

  • Judging will take place in late May, and winners and finalists will be announced in June.

NOTE: May 1, 2017, deadline on the form is for the international competition. All entries must be delivered to the City of Stillwater Community Center by April 14, 2017, to qualify for the local competition. The local winners will be submitted to the international competition by the Stillwater Sister Cities Council.
