(STILLWATER, OKLA./ Dec. 10, 2013) — The City of Stillwater is pleased to introduce Steve Cast as the featured artist for the 37th Annual Stillwater Arts Festival.

The Edmond jewelry artist was selected as the 2013 Festival Committee Choice winner, which means his jewelry is featured on the 2014 festival’s publicity materials, including the poster.

“For ring and bracelet featured on the poster, I used two different metals and fabricated them by hand,” Cast said. “They are my best sellers.”

He explained that there are two ways to make jewelry--by wax smith casting or fabricating by hand. Wax smith casting is casting a wax mold then pouring and allowing the metal to harden, which can take up to twenty hours. Fabricating is bending the metal typically with a hammer, saw or pliers.

“I started making jewelry forty years ago in college,” Cast said. “I only did jewelry because it was required for my major, but I fell in love with it.”

While attending the University of Central Oklahoma, Cast earned a bachelor’s degree of science majoring in biology and a master’s in art. He said he gets a lot of his inspiration from his majors and nature. After college, Cast apprenticed at a gold store in Oklahoma City for ten years where he mastered the art of jewelry making.

His passion was originally for sculpting, which Cast said he still does from time to time. Along with jewelry making and sculpting, he enjoys making custom knifes and drawing. Though he makes a variety of art, he only takes his jewelry to art festivals.

“I started coming to the Stillwater Festival about twenty years ago,” Cast said. “It’s a quality show.”

Cast said he plans to attend this year’s festival and has already begun making art for it. His favorite thing about attending the Stillwater Arts Festival is meeting people and discussing his designs with customers.

“I’ve accumulated a lot of good friends, and I plan on coming back,” Cast said.
