(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Aug. 2, 2013) –– Many novels become classics based on their unforgettable characters. Jay Gatsby, Atticus Finch and Scarlett O’Hara are just a few of the characters deeply ingrained in readers’ imaginations and American culture. Bestselling author William Bernhardt will explain how to create these memorable characters at a free program offered at the Stillwater Public Library Saturday, Aug. 17, at 1 p.m.
“All fiction should be character-driven,” said Bernhardt. “If your characters don't interest readers, even the most exciting plot will fail.”
Bernhardt, who is the author of thirty books including the bestselling Ben Kincade legal series, is also the author of a series of writing instruction books. “Creating Character: Bringing Your Story to Life” in the series explains the relationship between character and plot, and how the perfect melding of the two produces a mesmerizing story.
“Character is revealed throughout the plot of a novel,” said Bernhardt. “Not by dumping a bunch of details, but by the choices a character makes under pressure and the changes a character undergoes throughout the story.”
The program is sponsored by Stillwater Writers in partnership with the library.
“We’re thrilled to have Bill visit our group,” said Judith Sexton of Stillwater Writers. “We’re hoping to give area residents a chance to meet and learn from an award winning author while also learning more about our writing club.”
Stillwater Writers, one of the two oldest writing organizations in Oklahoma, is comprised of veteran writers, published authors, beginners and those who write as a hobby. The group meets on the third Saturday of the month at the library to discuss writing and provide encouragement to each other.
“Our meetings include guest authors and discussions on writing trends,” said Sexton. “We also read our current writing projects and offer each other constructive critiques.”
New members and guests are welcome to attend any of the club’s events, including a meeting on Sept. 21 and program on Oct. 19 featuring astrophysicist Wayne Harris-Wyrick who will discuss using supernatural elements in novels.
