(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Feb. 1, 2013) — A chinchilla, hedgehog, and snake in the library? Why, yes! Stillwater Public Library will be hosting these little critters at a special program where children will get to meet live animals face to face. The free program, “Critter Tales,” will take place Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 4:30 p.m. as part of the Winter Reading Program.
“Children will get to learn about animal habitats and conservation in a fun and exciting way,” said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian. “By seeing the animals up close, we hope the kids gain an appreciation for wildlife and become inspired to discover more about the world around them,”
The presenters escorting the animals to the library are from Critter Tales, Inc., a non-profit Oklahoma City organization which travels throughout the state to introduce children to wildlife.
"We’re excited anytime we get to meet animals in the library," said Murray. "But this is a special occasion because we’ll get to meet some of our wilder friends. At the same time, because it’s “Spay Day,” families can learn about their pets as well.”
“Spay Day” is an annual campaign focusing on the importance of keeping the pet reproduction under control. The City of Stillwater Animal Welfare, the Stillwater Humane Society, Companion Animal Assistance Program and Petco will greet attendees in library lobby with information about spaying, neutering and caring for pets.
“We need to start early with educating children about the importance of spaying and neutering pets,” said Mary Dickey, animal welfare officer. “But it is a hard concept to learn at a young age, which is why we’ll be giving away fun and age appropriate activity sheets and coloring pages.”
“Critter Tales” is open to all ages with a target audience of grade school children. No registration is required, but space is limited.
The Stillwater Public Library is located at 1107 S. Duck St. Library hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Library programs are sponsored by Friends of the Library and KOSU.
