Controlled Burning Inside Stillwater
The following shall serve as a guideline for controlled burning inside the City limits of Stillwater. Each condition shall be met prior to burning.
- Burn permits shall be obtained from the Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, or their designee prior to burning
- Stillwater Fire Department Station #1 (Headquarters) shall be notified no more then one hour prior to burning at 405-372-0497.
- Wind speed shall be five (5) miles per hour or less. Prevailing winds shall not take products of combustion towards any adjacent property.
- Only brush and wood products shall be burned. The burning of petroleum products (shingles, oil, tires, roofing felt paper, etc.), leaves, materials that contain rubber, garbage, plastic, or animal wastes is prohibited.
- The person controlling the burn shall provide his/her own fire protection, i.e. shovels, garden hoses, etc.
- The burn pile must be not less than 50 feet away from adjacent exposures such as power lines and overhanging trees and any other exposure that might be affected by the burn pile. Further, the burn pile shall be located not less than 150 feet from an occupied structure. The burn process must not endanger any structure or exposure.
- Fires shall be attended throughout the burn process. The duration shall last until such times as flames are absent and smoke has diminished.
- Burn permits are valid for a period not exceeding 30 days.
- Residents shall understand that with or without a burn permit, they can be held civilly liable for damage due to their controlled burn. Residents can also be fined $200 per occurrence for illegally burning.
- Burn permits will only be issued from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, not during weekends or City of Stillwater observed holidays.
- Unless otherwise approved by the Fire Marshal, air curtains (or similar devices) shall be used in conjunction with a pit for burning inside the City' limits.
- Upon the receipt of a complaint from the public of problems due to smoke or ash from an intentional burn, a SFD representative shall investigate and determine if a safety or health problem does exist. Upon finding a problem, the representative shall advise the person responsible for controlling the burn to extinguish the pile or use SFD equipment to do so.
