(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Dec. 17, 2012) – Area children are encouraged to dig out of the winter blahs and dig into reading this winter at the Stillwater Public Library. The library returns with its Winter Reading Program for a third year. “Dig into Winter Reading” is an nine-week program, Jan. 14 to March 15, designed to keep children reading through the cold months ahead.
“Reading for fun should be a year round activity for children,” said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian. “Reading for pleasure has been linked to increased academic skills, lower stress, better social skills and even higher professional attainment in adulthood. Our winter reading program is one way to encourage children to read beyond school requirements.”
Each “Dig into Winter Reading” participant will receive a map which includes twenty steps to completion. Steps are achieved by reading books, getting a library card, submitting a book review, or attending a library program, such as “Family Movie Night” in January or “Critter Tales” in February.
Children will earn incentives as they complete the steps on the map. For every five steps completed, the participant will receive a coupon from a Stillwater merchant. When the map is completed, the child’s name will be entered in a drawing for one of four $25 gift certificates provided by the Friends of the Library.
The winter reading program is free and open to the public. Library programs are sponsored by The Friends of the Library and KOSU. Winter Reading sponsors include McDonalds, Mazzio's, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s and Youth Fitness Zone.
