Family Movie Night no titles(STILLWATER, OKLA / July 22, 2013) — A fun, library oriented film series will start at the Stillwater Public Library when it opens “Dewey Decimal Theater.”  Family friendly films on a wide array of subjects will be shown each second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. on the library’s giant screen.

“Very soon, schools across the country will introduce the Common Core which emphasizes non-fiction reading and writing,” said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian.  “In anticipation of this new standard, we wanted to start highlighting our non-fiction collection in a fun way.”

Each month, the Dewey Decimal Theater will show a film classified in a different section of non-fiction starting with the 000s, or General section, and ending with the 900s, or History and Geography section.

The first film in the series will be shown Tuesday, Aug. 13.

“The content of our first film illustrates Dewey number 001.973 because it features monsters in the United States,” said Murray.  “These particular monsters come into our world, scare children and collect their screams to power their own world.”

Books on the movie topic will be on display and available at each film.

“Our goal is to get kids used to seeing the Dewey Decimal system in action, so they will not be intimidated as they see it more and more at school,” said Murray.  “The system is not so hard if we have fun applying it to everyday subjects and activities.”

“Family Film Night” is free of charge and open to all ages.  Children are welcome to wear their pajamas, with shoes, and to bring a pillow to the movie.  Popcorn will be available, but participants are asked to bring a water bottle with a closeable lid.
