2012 Trash-Off is another success
(STILLWATER, OKLA / April 16, 2012) — If the streets of Stillwater look a little less littered, it’s because volunteers for the City of Stillwater Annual Trash-Off event recently hit the streets armed with trash bags to pick up trash.
More than 140 participants picked up 133 bags. Event planners selected 21 sites to clean up and 40 drop sites for bags of trash to be picked up by city crews. The participants started at the Community Center at 9 a.m., where they received assigned areas to go pick up trash. They came back at noon for hot dogs and door prizes.
There were 16 groups representing various organizations: Williams Diversity, Black Graduate Student Association, OSU Office of Undergraduate Admission, OSU Sociology Club, Wal-Mart 0137 on Perkins Rd., City of Stillwater, OSU Botanical Society, Young Professionals of Stillwater, Stillwater High School National Honor Society, Individuals 1, Individuals 2, Will Rogers Cub Scout Pack 12, OSU Psychology Program, First Christian Church, and Sustainable Stillwater.
The traveling trophy was awarded to the City of Stillwater group for picking up the most trash—a grand total of 23 bags.
The City of Stillwater began sponsoring the Trash-Off six years ago in order to keep trash from entering waterways. “It’s nice to see the interest pick up with more volunteers this year,” said Lou Ann Fisher, Environmental Programs manager and event coordinator. “These events continue to help citizens take part in something that benefits everyone living in Stillwater. Children of all ages and parents come to this event to participate together. Children, especially, believe they have done such a great job.”
The following businesses contributed to this year’s event: Wal-Mart (on Perkins Rd) and the Chipotle Mexican Grill.
