(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 9, 2012) – Children and adults use the Internet daily at home, work and school.  Although there are an infinite number of important uses for the Internet, there are also numerous lurking dangers such as cyber bullying, scams, viruses and a host of other issues.  On Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m., the Stillwater Public Library will present “WebWise,” a program for adults, teens, and children on using the Internet safely.

“Internet safety is a real concern for everyone, but especially for parents and kids,” said Nikole Kelty, children’s librarian.  “Predators can communicate with children anonymously through instant messaging, social networking sites, chat rooms, message boards, and even cell phones. They take advantage of children’s natural vulnerabilities.  The Stillwater Public Library wants to help families understand these dangers and learn how to protect themselves.”

After a general safety overview, “WebWise” participants will be divided into three age groups to learn specific hazards and safety techniques.

Stillwater Police Department detectives Les Little and Greg Miller will lead the discussion for adults and parents.  Scott Freeman, young adult librarian, will lead a conversation with teens and Kelty will conduct the children’s portion which will be appropriate for children in second through fifth grades.  A parent is welcomed to accompany a child to the children’s session.

“Cyber bullying, scams and worse are prevalent, but most kids just don't know what to do when it happens to them,” said Kelty.  “Many children, especially teens, do not feel that turning to a parent or guardian is an option because they believe even more trouble will follow.  By educating both parents and children, we hope to provide an important conversation starter so families can determine how they will approach Internet safety together.”

“WebWise” is free and open to the public.  Participants are encouraged to register for the program by contacting the library at (405) 372-3633, ext.106 or askalibrarian@stillwater.org.
