flyer

In the news! The American Library Association gave top billing to the Stillwater Public Library in a news release about National Library Week.

"Here are just a few programs that libraries are holding to promote the You belong @ your library theme.
Stillwater (Okla.) Public Library reminds library users that the strength of libraries is the diversity of their collections and their unwavering commitment to serve all people. To showcase this idea, the library  will celebrate Library Snapshot Day on April 9.  Residents of Stillwater are invited to stop by the library to have their  photo taken and  share the story of how they use the library and how the library impacts their community.  The library also encourages those who cannot attend to share their stories and photos on the library's website or Facebook page."

Here's the release.

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / April 5, 2012) –Whether they are job seekers looking for resources to land a new job, parents looking for free activities for children or book lovers searching for their next favorite book, Stillwater Public Library wants each community member to know “You belong @ your library.”  This National Library Week, April 9-14, the library invites the community to celebrate the place where they all belong.

“Libraries have historically served as our nation’s greatest equalizers of knowledge and opportunity,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director. “The strength of libraries—the strength of our library—is the diversity of our collection and our unwavering commitment to serve all people.  Each person in our community, young or old, rich or poor, conservative or liberal, has a place at Stillwater Public Library.”

The library will begin its celebration with a bookmark contest.  Readers of all ages are encouraged to stop by the library now to pick up a contest form, which includes space for participants to design a bookmark illustrating what they like best about the library.  The form must be returned to the library by April 1.  Forms will also be available for download on the library website at http://library.stillwater.org.

“All bookmarks will be on display during National Library Week and everyone is encouraged to stop by and ‘vote with coins or bills’ for their favorite bookmark,” said Reynolds.  “Donations collected from the bookmark contest will go to the Stillwater Public Library Trust which ensures the growth, security, and perpetuity of the library by supporting programs and services.”

A winner from each age category will be chosen to have their bookmark reproduced for distribution.

On Monday, April 9, the Library will celebrate “Library Snapshot Day.”  Everyone in the community is invited to stop by the library to share the story of how they use the library and how the library impacts the community.  There will also be an option for participants to have their photo taken.  Those who cannot come to the library can complete a “Snapshot Day” form on the library’s website or Facebook page.

National Library Week, first observed in 1958, is a national celebration sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country.
