Children invited 'to buckle up' for Stillwater Public Library's 'Winter Reading Roadtrip'
11-week program for children to read this winter
(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 3, 2011) –The Stillwater Public Library is introducing “Winter Reading Roadtrip,” an 11-week program designed to keep children reading during the cold months ahead.
“Our summer reading club creates a huge boost in reading, and we want children to keep those habits all year long,” said Sue Busch, children’s librarian.
According to Busch, National Endowment for the Arts and U.S. Labor and Education Department information indicates when children’s pleasure reading declines, test scores decline, math and science skills dip, and basic writing skills suffer.
“These deficiencies continue into adulthood, so it is imperative that we keep Stillwater children reading all the time and not just while they are at school. Just as strengthening your muscles helps in other areas of health, exercising your reading muscle strengthens other cognitive abilities,” she said.
Reading Roadtrip members will receive a map that includes 20 steps that must be achieved including accomplishments such as reading books, getting a library card, submitting a book report on books from a specified list of Newbery winners or classics, attending a program like the “Born to Do Science” series or “Early Out Movies” and more.
Children can earn incentives along the way. For every five steps members complete, they will receive a coupon from a Stillwater merchant. When the map is completed, members’ names will be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate donated by sponsors.
The event is free and open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
