(STILLWATER, OKLA. / May 9, 2011) – This summer children and teens can travel the world just by visiting their hometown library.  The Stillwater Public Library’s world themed “Summer @ Your Library” will offer free movies, weekly programs for children and teens, and Summer Reading Clubs. Registration is now underway at the Help Desk and the Children's Help Desk.

  • Children Reading Club. Participants will receive a free information bag with games, puzzles, reading slips and t-shirt information. Members who read (or are read to) for 10 hours or more will qualify for the Awards Ceremony (July 28) and will receive an achievement certificate.  Children do not need to attend programs to be in the reading club.
  • Teen Reading Club. Members who have read 10 hours or more will receive reading prizes, drawing entries for Grand Prizes at the final program (July 27), and a certificate.

The adult summer program is taking a break this year, but all adults are encouraged to visit and read all summer long.

“One World, Many Stories” is the children's program series held Tuesdays from June 7 through July 26 with three presentations at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the Stillwater Public Library Auditorium. Children will be entertained by a variety of professional artists with storytelling, music, magic and theater.

“With this kind of talent available, Stillwater Public Library is the place to be this summer,” said Sue Busch, Children’s librarian.

Busch encourages participants to show up early because seating is limited to 300 people at each performance.  The 3:30 p.m. performance often has available seating.  Children who wear their “One World, Many Stories” Summer Reading Club t-shirt to the programs are eligible for prize drawings.  The children’s summer line-up is as follows:

  • June 7: Oklahoma Children’s Theatre:  This award-winning group will be performing “River Rat 7 Cat” with fabulous performances and an imaginative set.
  • June 14:  Three Points Karate.  William Pierce and instructors from his studio will demonstrate exciting karate moves while also showing children how to give respect and courtesy to others.
  • June 21: Kevin Wade.  This elementary school principal is an excellent magician who has it all – illusion, some humor and a little glitz and glamour.
  • June 28: Monty Harper.  Stillwater’s own Monty Harper, will perform wonderful songs that speak to children everywhere.  Monty’s love and respect for children is evident in his performance.
  • July 5: Professor B. Looney.  Steve Smith has been a regular for years, and this year, as Professor B. Looney, Steve will include some of his imaginative balloon creations.
  • July 12: Jean Hill and the Hill Irish dancers.  These wonderful Irish dancers, the same age as many of the children in the audience, will perform favorite Irish dances as they return for a second performance in the summer program.
  • July 19: Rana McCoy’s Children’s Operetta. This annual summer tradition features local children.
  • July 26: Mahenwahdose.  Storytellers Will Hill and Jehnean Washington were the first Native Americans to perform at the Smithsonian Native American Cultural Center.

“You are Here” Teen Summer Reading Program will be held each Wednesday June 8 through July 27 at 2 p.m. in the Stillwater Public Library, Room 119.  The Teen Program is for any young person that will be entering 6th to 12th grades in the fall.

“This year we will have an amazing blend of hands-on activities and presenters that will stoke creativity, illicit laughter and provide a fun learning environment, said Scott Freeman, teen librarian.

The teen summer line-up is as follows:

  • June 8: Science Museum Oklahoma.  Oklahoma Science Museum brings another entertaining science-based program to Stillwater Public Library.
  • June 15: Sock Creatures.  We don’t know in what country these creatures can be found, but you will have fun making your own special sock creatures.
  • June 22: Roads and Bridges.  Travel through the history of Oklahoma highways  experiments, bridge building, edible roads (with potholes served on the side) and instant root beer floats.
  • June 29: Insect Adventure.  The Insect Adventure program from OSU will bring insects from around the world.
  • July 6: The Upside Down Artist.  Oklahoma artist, Dana Helms, will teach her upside down drawing technique.
