Stillwater Public Library launches next generation of library services; downloadable eBooks and audiobooks now available

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Feb. 21, 2011) –Stillwater Public Library card holders now have 24-hour a day access to popular library materials with the library’s new service, “OK Virtual Library.”  The new service makes eBooks and audiobooks available to download at home, work, school, or anywhere internet service is available.

“eBooks continue to grow in popularity, so we are excited to offer this new format,” said Library Director Lynda Reynolds. “We are starting out with a great selection of best-selling eBook titles, and we will continue to expand both the eBook and audiobook selections through the ongoing purchase of additional titles.”

OK Virtual Library currently has nearly one thousand ebooks and one hundred audiobooks available.  Library card holders can checkout up two items at a time. A link to Project Guttenberg, adds 15,000 classic titles that never expire and do not count against the checkout limit.

To get started checking out eBooks and audiobooks, users need a valid library card, a computer, and an Internet connection.  From the library’s webpage, http://library.stillwater.org/, the “Ebooks and Audiobooks” link will take users to “OK Virtual Library” where they can download the free software required to enjoy the eBooks and audiobooks available on the site.

Once the software is downloaded, users can browse the selections or search for specific titles, then checkout online.  The eBooks and audiobooks can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred from the computer to popular devices such as ereaders, mobile devices, MP3 players and more. At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire and are returned to the collection, so there will never be late fees.  Users may return eBooks early to borrow additional titles.

Oklahoma Virtual Library is a cooperative project with the public libraries in Miami, Mustang, Ponca City, and Watonga.  The new service was funded by the Friends of the Library, library aid from the state department of libraries and contributions from the other member libraries.

“Books cost money, regardless of the format. Advances in computing will never change that,” said Reynolds.  “In a time of tight budgets, this service is the latest, economical way for our communities to share information resources and literature in a new format, while continuing to keep opportunities for education, literacy and lifelong learning free for everyone.”

The site is available 24/7 and the service is free.
