Library bookmark winners announced; bookmarks now available

bookmark winners Kassie Strecker, age 12; Donovan Zetterberg, age 11; Mason Bambrough, age 7; and Stefanie Bambrough are the winners of the Stillwater Public Library’s bookmark design contest.

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / May 9, 2011) – The winning bookmark designs from the National Library Week are now available at the Stillwater Public Library. Designs in four categories were chosen by the public and were printed as bookmarks.

In the Preschool to Grade 1 category, Mason Bambrough, age 7, was chosen with his depiction of local musician Monty Harper “singing his silly songs.”  Bambrough said one of his favorite things about the library is the summer reading program with all its fun shows and great prizes.

Donovan Zetterberg, age 11, won in the Grades 2-5 category for his illustration of the library’s lizards swinging throughout a shelf of books.  Zetterberg’s library favorites include picking out books, joining the summer reading programs, and of course, looking at the lizards.

In the Grade 6-12 category, Kassie Strecker, age 12, was chosen for her colorful array of classic books titles.

“We love coming (to the library) weekly to get lots and lots of books,” said Strecker.  “And we love the summer programs.”

Stefanie Bambrough, mother of the winner in the Preschool to Grade 1 category, won in the adult category.  Her design, “The Stillwater Public Library: Shaping the Future, Preserving the Past, and Leading through Reading,” included a depiction of the library’s Angie Debo statue.  Bambrough’s entry also included what she liked best about the library:

“The Stillwater Public Library is an asset to this community and also to my family.  My two boys have been significantly impacted by its existence.  Beginning with the storytimes at a young age, they have already developed an excitement about books and reading.  This library has greatly enhanced their reading opportunities with its vast collection of books, videos and learning materials.  And I as a parent have been very thankful I have a place to come to help broaden their horizons on life and learning and the world of books.”

The bookmarks of each of the four designs are available at the service desks.

Celebrating National Library Week April 8 through April 17: Our Library–The Heart of the Community

flyer

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / March 24, 2011) – Public libraries are an essential part of American life for citizens young and old. Each year libraries are recognized during National Library Week.

This year, the Stillwater Public Library is inviting the community to celebrate National Library Week April 8 through April 17. The week will be marked by creative contests and activities culminating with the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library Used Booksale.

“We work hard to make the library the heart of the Stillwater community,” Library Director Lynda Reynolds said.  “With 314,684 visits to the library, 332,061 checkouts, 83,721 reference questions answered, 3,949 new cards issues, and more than 30,000 library users served last year, Stillwater citizens are helping us achieve that goal.”

The community will have a chance to illustrate that idea with three contests designed to show how important the library is in people’s lives.

The library’s bookmark contest gives people of all ages the chance to tell a story in pictures about their experiences at the Library. The bookmarks can be designed using any art medium, except computer generated graphics. They must be submitted in person on the official contest form available online or at the library service desks.  The deadline for bookmark submission is Friday, April 8.

Library visitors are invited to vote for their favorite bookmarks from Monday, April 11 to Thursday, April 14, after which one winner from four different age categories will be chosen. The winning bookmarks will be professionally printed and distributed in the library.

Teens in grades six through twelve can design a “glog” showing their favorite book or author. Glogs are interactive digital posters designed at http://www.glogster.com/.  Glogster accounts are free.  Participants should email the link for their glog to askalibrarian@stillwater.org no later than Tuesday, April 12. One winning glog will be professionally printed on a poster to hang in the library and be given to its creator.

Library users 18 and over are invited to submit a 500 word story about their favorite library memory or an essay illustrating why the library is important to them. Submissions are due by Monday, April 11, either brought to the library or electronically to askalibrarian@stillwater.org.  One winning submission will be printed in the Stillwater NewsPress. The winner will also receive a $20 gift certificate for the Friends of the Library book sale.

All National Library Week contests and events are free and open to the public. Entry forms and contest details are available on the library’s webpage.

The library has a week full of fun events planned:
