Take home netbooks takes off at Stillwater Public Library
(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 12, 2011) – Job searchers, college students, and other Stillwater Public Library adult cardholders have a new item to borrow. Last week, the library launched its netbook borrowing program, the first of many technological improvements library users will see from the library’s recent $93,130 federal grant, OKConnects.
“The netbooks are the first of many ways the Stillwater Public Library plans to better connect our community members to the world,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director. “We envision people checking them out to build resumes, write school papers, and do simple household accounting. We're especially eager to see our computer students check them out to practice techniques after a class.”
Netbooks are small, lightweight versions of laptops. The library’s six Asus Eee PC 1008P netbooks include wireless internet capabilities, Microsoft Works word processing, spreadsheet and database which are abbreviated versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Converter programs on the netbooks and the library’s computers allow users to open Works documents on the library’s PCs and visa versa.
“The netbooks also come with built-in speakers, a camera, and Skype,” said Reynolds. “This makes it perfect for communicating by video with family members, potential employers, or online class instructors.”
Any library user with an adult library card is eligible to borrow a netbook for three days at a time. Before returning the netbooks, users are cautioned to either send documents to their own e-mail account or to copy saved files to a flash drive, as the netbooks will be digitally erased after each use and documents will not be retrievable.
