(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Oct. 6, 2011) – For nearly 80 years, Lauara Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series have delighted adults and children alike. On Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m., history and quilt enthusiast Judy Wampler will present “Laura Ingalls Wilder: From Wisconsin to Missouri.”
The program, sponsored by Payne County Home and Community Education, will feature artifacts mentioned in the “Little House” books and approximately 25 quilts to tell the story of Laura and her family's travel and pioneer life experiences.
“Historically, quilting has been an art that helps preserve history and literature,” said Deanna Armstrong, vice president of Payne County Home and Community Education. “Judy uses the program as a way to motivate children to become interested in history, quilting and reading.”
Wampler, a retired school teacher from Carthage, Mo., travels throughout the Midwest bringing her love of quilting and literature to children. She learned to hand piece quilts from her mother and grandmother and completed her first quilt just prior to her marriage.
The program, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, is best suited for elementary school children, but older students and adults are welcome to attend. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the program, and then head over to “Our Haunted Circus,” the downtown Halloween festival from 5 to 9 p.m.
“Laura Ingalls Wilder: From Wisconsin to Missouri” is and made possible through the OSU Ambassador Grant Program.
