Stillwater Public Library’s toddler storytime starts Sept. 22
Register for Early Learning Lapsit Program now
(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Sept. 1, 2011) –Beginning Sept. 1, parents, grandparents, and caregivers may register toddlers for the Stillwater Public Library's Early Learning Lapsit Program. This fun-filled storytime for children ages 9-22 months includes stories, songs, rhymes and fingerplays.
“Lapsits are special storytimes specifically designed for toddlers,” said Children’s Librarian Mary Leslie. “Toddlers minds are like sponges at this age. They will absorb all of the information around them and still want more. The programs are short, fun and lively to maximize the learning experience.”
The main body of the program lasts about 15 minutes. While a librarian leads the lapsit, parents help their children with song and fingerplay movements like clapping hands and snapping fingers.
Following lapsit, parents can learn about library resources appropriate for toddlers, such as board books, music and Young at Art kits from the Wondertorium. Children then have a chance to explore the library and play with each other.
“For many toddlers, lapsit is the first experience in a social setting with children they do not know,” said Leslie. “It is a great way to gently prepare children for preschool and kindergarten.”
The eight-week program begins Thursday, Sept. 22. Two sessions are available, at 9:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. While the program is free and open to the public, each session is limited to ten child/caregiver pairs. Alternate childcare arrangements for siblings not enrolled in the program are necessary. Those interested in lapsit may register at the Children's Reference Desk or online at library.stillwater.org.
