(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Nov. 10, 2011) –After several medical crises and a devastating flood, Melissa Garcia has had to learn a lot about frugality and use it that knowledge to keep her family’s head above water.  Part of that frugality includes her expert use of coupons.  It is this skill that Garcia, known to thousands on the internet as “Consumer Queen,” will be sharing at the Stillwater Public Library on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.

“I think I realized how powerful couponing can be when I was able to get three carts of food for $19,” said Garcia.  “I was able to provide enough groceries for my family and had plenty left over to donate to my church and the battered women’s shelter.  This was one of my more extreme shopping trips, but to this day I am able to usually save 50 to 75 percetn off my grocery bill, if not more.”

Garcia has more than 24,000 followers on her blog ConsumerQueen.com and is a weekly guest on Kiss 98.9 FM’s Jack and Ron morning show.  She has been featured on the “Today Show” and was chosen by Wal-Mart to be a “Wal-Mart Mom,” one of just a handful of bloggers chosen by the company to represent the views of a typical mother.

“Advanced Couponing with Consumer Queen” will cover techniques such as stacking, rebates, “Triple Plays,” avoiding coupon traps, fraudulent use of coupons, and much more.

“It is important to never use a coupon in any way other than how it was intended,” said Garcia.  “Not only is fraudulent couponing unethical, but it causes stores to lose money and to quit doubling coupons or to stop taking them all together.  There are just so many legit deals out there that there is no reason to resort to fraudulent use.”

Knowledge of basic couponing is needed for the class, as Garcia will not be able to cover any basic techniques.  Prior to the class, beginning coupon users are encouraged to visit the Consumer Queen lesson page at http://tinyurl.com/7fqvkef  and read lessons 1-3 on “Where to Find Coupons,” Organizing and Storing Coupons,” and “Shopping with Coupons.”

Advanced Couponing with Consumer Queen is free and open to the public, though Garcia requests that each attendee bring one can of food to be donated to the Oklahoma Food Bank.  Attendees must be twelve or over, although infants are welcome.  Each participant will receive handout material, coupons and other goodies.  To register for the class or for more information, please call 405-372-3633 x 106 or email askalibrarian@stillwater.org.

Library hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  The Stillwater Public Library is located at 1107 S. Duck St. Library programs are co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and KOSU 91.7 fm.
