(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Aug. 15, 2011) – International bookbinding artist Bonnie Stahlecker is conducting a two-day workshop at the Stillwater Public Library Sept. 23-24.

“This workshop is a great opportunity for all of our book lovers to learn the art of making their own books,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director.

“Binding the Book" introduces participants to different bookbinding techniques and is sponsored by OSU Art Department through a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council.

Stahlecker has been making books since 1979 and has conducted bookbinding classes throughout the United States and internationally.  Her work is in numerous public and private collections and has been exhibited in international and national exhibitions.  In 1995 and 2000, Stahlecker was invited by the Flemish government to be an artist-in-residence at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium.  She has also attended residencies at the Banff Centre, Albion College and Auvillar Cultural Exchange Program in France.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, the workshop is being held in conjunction with an exhibit of works by the artist and her husband, David Morrison.

The exhibition “Divided Vision” will be at the Gardiner Art Gallery from Aug. 29 to Sept. 23.   The gallery is located in the OSU Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

“Many people in Stillwater don’t know that the Gardiner Art Gallery and its events are free and open to the public,” said Chris Ramsay, OSU Art Department Head.  “The gallery features many different artists throughout the year.”

A schedule of upcoming exhibitions can be viewed at http://art.okstate.edu/news/upcomingschedule.php.

Enrollment for the “Binding the Book” workshop is free, but space is limited.  To register, call or email Ramsay at 405-744-6016 or chris.ramsay@okstate.edu
