(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 3, 2011) – It's New Year's and that means resolutions. While you resolve to to lose weight, exercise and save money, the Stillwater Public Library has issued a challenge to Stillwater adults— read a book a month during 2011—and as a reward, you could win a new e-reader.

“Reading has been proven to reduce stress, alleviate depression, aid in problem solving abilities, and ward off dementia later in life. ‘Reading more’ is the perfect New Year’s resolution,” said Library Director Lynda Reynolds. “We are offering the chance to win the e-reader so that everyone will push themselves just a little more to read.”

The “Book a Month Challenge 2011” requires participants to read at least one adult or young-adult book every month this year. Participants have until the end of January to sign up for the challenge. They'll receive a reading log and a list of reading suggestions.

Each book read should be entered into the log and submitted to the library at the end of the year. E-books count toward the required 12. Anyone who completes the challenge will be entered into a drawing for an e-reader provided by the Friends of the Library. The winner may choose to substitute the e-reader for a gift certificate to purchase e-books or hardcopy books.

To fit reading time into an already hectic schedule, Reynolds suggests keeping a library paperback in the car. She also suggests turning off the electronics and taking a half hour to read together as a family.

“Children who read for pleasure do better in school, but research shows that reading for pleasure among children is declining. As a parent, the single best reason to read is to let your children see that you believe in and enjoy reading," Reynolds said.

The challenge is free and open to anyone 18 and over.  To register for the challenge, go to the library’s Help Desk or e-mail askalibrarian@stillwater.org.
