Stillwater Public Library launches Amazon Kindle compatibility with ebook service

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Sept. 23, 2011) –Amazon Kindle users can now download free e-books at the Stillwater Public Library.  In January, the library introduced its e-book service, Overdrive, for almost every device except the Kindle.  This week, Overdrive added the Kindle to its list of compatible devices.

“We are immensely pleased to be able to offer our library service to Kindle users,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director.

Library card users can access the e-book service from the library’s homepage at http://library.stillwater.org.  An Overdrive icon leads users to the Oklahoma Virtual Library website where they can browse for materials.  Once an item is added to a cart, the user can choose to checkout, then download the title.  That takes the user to the Amazon website where the e-book can be checked out through an Amazon account, then downloaded via wi-fi or USB.  The e-books will not download using the Kindle’s 3G network.

“All but a very small percentage of the library’s titles will be available for Kindle use,” said Reynolds.  “Right now we are offering over 4,000 e-book titles and over 1000 downloadable audio books for our users and the number of titles keeps growing every month.”

A grant earlier this summer from the Oklahoma Department of libraries allowed the library to purchase about 3,600 titles, which it shares with the statewide e-book consortium, Oklahoma Virtual Library.  The consortium was started by the Stillwater Public Library and now represents 17 independent libraries.

The downloadable service is free and available from home at any time or day.  The service does require a Stillwater Public Library card that is available for free for anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Payne County.
