'It’s Raining Cats and Dogs! Spay and Neuter Education Day' from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Stillwater Public Library
(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Feb. 4, 2011) – It's raining cats and dogs! Last year, 1,543 dogs and 892 cats came through the City of Stillwater Animal Welfare Shelter, and local animal welfare agencies, including the shelter, along with the Stillwater Public Library hope to reduce that number by educating children and their families about the necessity of spaying and neutering their pets.
To help get that word out, the shelter and five other local animal welfare agencies will hold "It’s Raining Cats and Dogs! Spay and Neuter Education Day" from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Stillwater Public Library.
"While the Animal Welfare Shelter didn't have to euthanize any healthy, adoptable pets this past year, we still have an overpopulation of cats and dogs," said Mary Dickey, Animal Welfare. "The single best way to solve the problem is for community members to spay and neuter their pets."
The event will include pet-related crafts for children and families that will also teach about responsible pet ownership. Some of the activities include constructing a pet coloring book, diary or album, making healthy pet treats, balloon animals, making gifts for pets, and playing games about taking care of pets. Pet related prizes will be awarded and local pet supply stores will offer giveaways. Books and other educational material will be available to take home and to check out.
"Spay Day" co-sponsors include the City of Stillwater Animal Shelter, the Stillwater Public Library, the Friends of the Library, OSU’s Small Animal Clinic, the Humane Society of Stillwater, and the Companion Animal Assistance Program.
"It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to leave their pets at home.
