Career advice from '50 Jobs in 50 States' author April 6 at Stillwater Public Library
(STILLWATER, OKLA. / March 11, 2011) – Cheesemaking in Wisconsin, patrolling the border in Arizona, meatpacking in Kansas, and working as a roustabout in Oklahoma. Daniel Seddiqui has done it all including 46 other jobs that he tried during one year when he set out to explore the careers America had to offer. On Wednesday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m., Seddiqui will visit the Stillwater Public Library to describe the lessons he learned during that year as described in his new book, “50 Jobs in 50 States: one man's journey of discovery across America.”
The program is presented by the library, OSU’s Academic and Career Development Center, Stillwater High School, Lincoln Academy and the Friends of the Library.
“After graduating from USC, my job outlook was grim," said Seddiqui. “I had already received more than forty rejections at job interviews. So with no prospects on the horizon, I decided go out and see just what the 'Land of Opportunity' had to offer.”
Seddiqui, whose experience has been featured on Fox News, the Today Show and ABC’s World News Tonight, spent 2009 visiting one state each week while working a job that reflected the culture and economy of each state. Some of those occupations included working as an auto mechanic in Michigan, a coalminer in West Virginia, a pit-crew member at an Indiana racetrack, and a lobsterman in Maine.
“Working these fifty jobs, meeting people from a vast array of American cultures, and keeping up the search for a new job every week helped me overcome many obstacles,” said Seddiqui. “I learned important lessons that I think will be helpful for many people, whether they are looking for a job, deciding on a career, entering the job market for the first time or dreaming of breaking out of a rut and trying something new.”
The program is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow Seddiqui’s presentation and copies of his book will be available for purchase.
