(STILLWATER, OKLA. / April 6, 2010) — Stillwater residents will begin receiving their Blue Carts this week.

David Higgins, head of Waste Management, said, "As soon as your Blue Cart is delivered, you may begin using it your next collection day, and we will collect yard waste on the same day."

Residents' new once-per-week collection day is printed on the brochure that is attached to the cart. Higgins pointed out that instructions for using the cart are printed on the brochure as well. "It's really simple: Park It. Point It. Space It."

  • PARK IT with the wheels to the curb
  • POINT IT with the lid's arrow pointing to the center of the road
  • SPACE IT with five feet from any obstacle including parked cars, mailboxes, poles, etc.

Higgins added, "There are residents who will receive their Blue Carts in July. This includes neighborhoods around the OSU campus and a few other areas. Phase 2 households may select their cart size until July 1."

Forms are available at stillwater.org and at the following locations.

  • In person: Customer Service Window at the Stillwater Municipal Building (723 S. Lewis)

Coming soon to a curb near you—Blue Carts!
Automated Residential Waste Collection Program begins in April

» Online form: "Select Your Blue Cart Size" | Implementation Map | Watch Videos | Tips and FAQs | Print Powerpoint Presentation

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Feb. 16, 2010) — Beginning this spring, a new, automated system for residential curbside waste collection will begin in Stillwater. Each household with curbside services will receive a blue wheeled cart at no additional charge.

The Automated Residential Waste Collection Program is efficient, safe, and more sanitary than the standard bag collection. And, switching from cans to carts is easy. Residents just need to roll the cart out to the curb on the designated trash collection day, which is once per week. The trucks outfitted with hydraulic arms do the rest of the work.

According to Waste Management Director David Higgins, "Automated waste collection programs are one of the most advanced trash systems in use today. They have been implemented in many cities across the U.S. and Canada with great results."

The City of Stillwater conducted a pilot program from September 2008 through February 2009 on 3,000 households. The pilot participants were surveyed and they provided positive feedback. As a result, the Stillwater Utilities Authority Trustees recommended the citywide expansion, which will take place in two phases— with the majority of households beginning in April and the rest in July.

Selecting your cart size: [Watch Video]
Unsure of what size cart to select, stop by the Stillwater Municipal Building to see the different sizes.

Each household will receive a standard 96-gallon cart, unless residents complete and return a form requesting another option by April 1. Households that currently have House-Side Service or are located outside Stillwater city limits will also receive the 96-gallon carts.

Higgins said, "Individuals or couples may want smaller carts, while larger families may need the option that specifies two 96-gallon carts. When making a decision on cart size, people should note this is a once-per-week service and not twice."

Forms are available in the following places:

  • Online at stillwater.org
  • Download print form
  • Printed in the Newspress on page five on Sundays during February and March
  • In person: Customer Service Window at the Stillwater Municipal Building (723 S. Lewis)
  • In person: Convenience Collection Center (807 S. Perkins Rd.)
  • In person: Stillwater Public Library (1107 S. Duck)
  • By phone: Waste Management Operations at (405) 742-8269.

Higgins said, "80 percent of those in the pilot program are using the 96-gallon cart, which is comparable to three typical galvanized household trash cans. Households will need to consider how much trash they produce each week. With once-a-week pick up, most families find this is a good option."
