Stillwater Trash-Off volunteers picked up 124 bags of trash

trash off volunteers

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Oct. 19, 2009) — A total of 124 bags of trash was picked in Stillwater by 57 volunteers at the recent Stillwater Trash-Off.

According to event organizer and City of Stilllwater Environmental Programs manager Lou Ann Snoddy, "Because of the heavy rain just prior to the event, most trash was washed into ditches, creeks and low-lying areas, so we remindered volunteers to be safe about picking up trash in hard to access places."

Snoody said one area of concern was 19th Street between Main and Perkins. "The ditches on this street have been cluttered with trash for quite some time. One of the larger volunteer groups took this area and did a great job cleaning it up."

Volunteers returned to the Moose Lodge at noon for hot dogs and award ceremony. Door prizes were provided for everyone and a Traveling Trash Trophy was awarded to the group that picked up the most bags of trash. This year, the award went to Sustainable Stillwater/ECO-OSU.

The City of Stillwater would like to thank the following volunteers for their clean-up accomplishments:

  • Girl Scout Brownie Troop 485 – 10 bags
  • Sustainable Stillwater / ECO-OSU – 33 bags
  • Sigma Phi Epsilon – 10 bags
  • Payne County Drug Court – 25 bags
  • Crazy Hat Tye-Dyes – 12 bags
  • Arnold Air Society – 17 bags
  • Individuals – 17 bags

The City of Stillwater would also like to thank Walmart on Perkins Road and Walmart on 6th Avenue for their contributions as well as the Moose Lodge, 301 S. Perkins Rd.
