Pirates of the Prairie, David Warren (black hat) and Michael Roberson (dreadlocks) from City of Stillwater Parks Events and Recreation, stormed Downtown Stillwater to unfurl the Jolly Roger above Debbie's Hallmark and announce the upcoming Downtown Halloween Festival and its Pirates on the Prairie theme. The festival is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The outlandish costumes were courtesy of festival sponsor Costumes Balloons and Stuff, 113 S. Perkins Road.

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Sept. 12, 2009) — Ahoy, me hearties! Stillwater's 19th Annual Downtown Halloween Festival will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. on Main Street between 6th and 9th Avenues.

In addition to the traditional children's games, the costume contest and trick-or-treating with downtown merchants, this year's festival will include musical entertainment by the Rum Fellows, a Norman-based pirate band, and two large inflatables (Blackbeard's Revenge Slide and the Ghost Town Maze/Laser Tag) and a "ghost ship" stage is currently being crafted by the scallywags o'er at the Parks, Events and Recreation Department. That's right, ye landlubbers!

According to Downtown Halloween Festival committee member and BID coordinator Angela McLaughlin, "It seemed only fitting that we announce this year's theme in time for International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Sept. 19."

Earlier this week, a merry crew hoisted the Jolly Roger on the flagpole atop of Debbie's Hallmark at the corner of 7th Avenue and Main Street to kick-off the fun.

"Because one of the categories in the costume contest is 'Best Use of Theme,' we wanted to give everyone time to come up with their best swashbucklin' buccaneer costume," McLaughlin said.

For all the little ghosts and goblins attending the event there will be free "Bags of Swag" and plenty of grub for sale in the food court. All activities are free of charge, except for the inflatables that will cost $3 per wristband or $5 for two wristbands. A wristband will allow each child to slide and play as many times as he or she wishes.

“Blimey! Downtown Stillwater is excited about the pirate theme this year. I'm personally looking forward to hearing the land-locked pirate band, the Rum Fellows, sing Okie sea shanties,” said John Bartley, Business Improvement District Board chairman. “We are happy to work with talented people at Parks, Events and Recreation to once again present a first-rate, family-friendly event. Events like this allow our downtown merchants to say 'thank ye' to our customers and the community for supporting Downtown Stillwater.”

We are happy to partner with COCAA and help the community in this way," said McLaughlin.
