(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Oct. 13, 2009) — The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting celebrating the reopening of Runway 17-35 at the Stillwater Regional Airport Wednesday, Oct. 21. The ceremony starts at 1:15 p.m. in Airport Terminal Building, 2020 W. Airport Rd.

The runway rehabilitation project was funded by a $5.9M grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestments Act of 2009, and it was one of the largest airport projects funded in Oklahoma. Other Oklahoma airports receiving the ARRA funding included Will Rogers World Airport, Wiley Post, Bartlesville, Okmulgee and Pauls Valley.

Completed in a record three months, the project was one of the first ARRA airport projects to be completed in the Federal Aviation Administration's southwest region.

'We are very excited about the completion of this project. Work began June 1 and was completed by Sept. 3 in time to for the first home OSU football game," Gary Johnson, airport director, said.

While construction was underway, local users were able to use a secondary runway. "They were patient with the whole process. Now, users—corporate, private and Big 12 sports—will benefit from the new concrete runway," he said.

The new concrete runway is safer and will cost a lot less to maintain. "The asphalt that we had had been put down in 1993 had reached its service life and was creating debris that could have damaged an aircraft," Johnson explained.

Stillwater Regional Airport’s  main runway is the fifth longest civilian runway in the state of Oklahoma and can accommodate up through a Boeing 757-size aircraft.

Scheduled to help with the ceremony will be Ms. Hagan kindergarten class from Sangre Ridge Elementary School. "The kindergarten class represents our future leaders as they help celebrate the new runway paving as a part of airport's role in economic development of Stillwater," Johnson said.

Project Partners include the following: Federal Aviation Administration, Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, TTK Construction Company Inc, Stillwater City Council, Stillwater Regional Airport Authority, Stillwater City Managers Office, Stillwater City Attorneys Office, FAA Facilities and Equipment, LBR Inc., RVA Inc. (Air Traffic Control), and Stillwater Regional Airport staff.
