(STILLWATER, OKLA.) — When you enter a house or building, most likely you’re not thinking about whether it is properly constructed and safe. Fortunately, your local safety experts think about building safety and fire prevention every day.

To help raise awareness of building safety, the City of Stillwater Building Safety Division is celebrating national Building Safety Week from May 5 through May 11 to help promote the use and understanding of building safety and fire prevention codes that protect lives and property. This year's theme is “Building Safety: Where You Live, Work and Play.”

First observed in 1980, Building Safety Week helps raises public awareness of critical safety issues affecting every person, regardless of age or occupation. These entail the structural soundness of the buildings where we live and work, reliability of fire prevention and suppression systems, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency and sustainability.

According to City Building Official Darin Morgan, "Inspectors, plan reviewers and others in the Building Safety Division work to ensure the safety of the structures in which all of us live, work, attend school, worship and play. These officials provide the first line of defense against building disasters. We are silent but vigilant guardians who work daily to ensure safety in the built environment."

To celebrate the week, the City of Stillwater will make available various community educational materials, including brochures about flood cleanup, mold prevention, green building and preparing for natural disasters. Materials are available for download from the City's web site at stillwater.org, or residents may stop by the Stillwater Municipal Building at 723 S. Lewis for copies.

The City of Stillwater is a member of the International Code Council that develops the most widely used building safety and fire prevention codes in the nation.

About Building Safety Week:

Building Safety Week, first observed in 1980, is sponsored by the International Code Council, a membership organization dedicated to building safety and fire prevention, of which the City of Stillwater is an active member. The International Code Council develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes—building safety codes developed by the International Code Council.
