Class for small business owners at Stillwater Public Library Aug. 11
(STILLWATER, OKLA / July 23, 2012) — In a search on Google, why does one business get displayed higher in the list of search results than its competitor? Does a higher ranking on such a list result in more business? On Saturday, Aug. 11, Dr. Brian Whitacre will answer these questions during the class “Search Engine Optimization” at the Stillwater Public Library. The class will help small business owners increase the visibility and popularity of their web pages.
“As many small business owners have learned, “build it and they will come” simply does not work when it comes to having a business website,” said Whitacre. “With more than 200 million websites in existence today, there's a clear need to set up your site so that search engines and your potential customers can find it easily.”
Search engine optimization is the process of structuring a website in such a way that it is more easily found during internet searches. The more a website appears in search engine results and the higher it appears in those results should translate to more website visitors.
In Whitacre’s class, participants will learn five proven techniques for search engine optimization, the basics of pay-per-click advertising, social media advertising basics, including Facebook Ads, and installing and using Google Analytics.
“This workshop on search engine optimization has been presented to over 200 small business owners across the state,” said Whitacre. “Many have left to immediately go update their site based on what they learned.”
Whitacre is an associate professor in OSU Department of Agricultural Economics. Whitacre’s work on rural extension programs about strengthening the understanding and application of broadband and e-commerce strategies by small businesses have assisted hundreds of rural small business owners.
The free class is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon. Registration for the class is required and is limited to 15 small business owners. To register, contact the Help Desk at firstname.lastname@example.org or 372-3633, ext. 106. Because participation is limited, registrants are required to provide 4- hours notice if they will not be able to attend.
Small business owners or website designers can find out more about the subject by borrowing the library’s copies of “Search engine optimization secrets: do what you never thought possible with SEO” by Danny Dover or “Search engine optimization: an hour a day” by Jennifer Grappone.
